Porto

Category : Travel

We came to Porto and fell asleep because we came at 11 o’clock pm. When we woke up we got tickets onto a train car (a car that looks like a train) that also gave us a tour of the Real Companhia Velha, a famous winery, and we also got tickets for a boat cruise to look at the 6 bridges (2 of which are designed by Gustav Eiffel). We went on the train first and drove around the city, then came to the winery. We watched a little video first. Then a man that worked there gave us a tour of the place. First he showed us the cellars. He told us that the winery was founded by the king, Joseph I. He reigned from 1750 to 1777. There were also wine barrels standing everywhere. There were giant barrels of wine like this:

and small ones like this:

Some of the barrels were 40 years old. I learned that the longer red wine stays in a barrel, the lighter in color it becomes! I also learned that Real Companhia Velha makes 2 things – Port wine and olive oil. After the cellars we went to the train, and rode back. We ate lunch and went on the boat cruise. The bridge that I liked most is one of the bridges made by Gustav Eiffel – the Dom Luís I, the most famous of Gustav’s 2 bridges. There are also 2 made by the best Portuguese bridge engineer, Edgar Cardoso: Arrabida and São João. They were all nice, all 6 of them!

We came back to shore and drove away to Madrid. It was fun being in Cáceres, Lisbon and Porto in less than a week!
