Cave of the Big Horse

Category : Travel

We decided to go to Grotte del Cavallone, a cave that looks like a horse’s eye. You get there by cable car (which takes about 10-20 min.) and THEN you need to walk for 10 minutes, and on a 20 degree angle! Our cable car ride took a longer time because in the middle of the ride we stopped and were hanging in midair for 5 minutes! Veronica and her friend Sophia were in the cable car behind us  and from what I heard from Mom, who also speaks Italian, Sophia was shouting to Veronica (even Nastia and I could hear her) “I’m scared!” “Hold on!” “Aaah! the cable car is shaking! Don’t move a finger!”. It was hilarious.

When we finally came to the end of the cable car line, I got to the cave entrance first. There was a beautiful view. I waited for the others to catch up and altogether we went inside the cave. We met an enormous stalagmite and went further. I saw, for the first time in my life, a hall of stalactites and stalagmites!!! It was amazing. Also, there was a LOT of water. Maybe there is a weather forecast for Grotta del Cavallone? 😉

We went past the never-ending well called the Inferno, which is a hole in the floor of the cave that people have not found the end of. Scientists say that it is bell-shaped (meaning that it is narrow at the start and gets wider and wider) In the place where we were walking there was another hole in the wall that there is a legend about. The legend says that demons live in the end of the hole. I don’t believe it, though.

It was pretty fun going to the end of the cave. We decided to go back to the cable car line, so in 10 minutes we had gone out of the wonders of the cave and into the open air. It was really nice being in the big horse cave!
